# 4. Space creation
Space in Users and Services Portal is a central place for managing users' access to provided services.
When you log in to the portal for the first time, and you were not invited to any space, you get an empty list of spaces.
Let's see how to create a first space:
The left panel of the displayed view contains a Create space button. Just click it.
Now you are displayed with a list of space types that can be created.
Depending on your status, you can request for Scientific space, Student space or a space for PSNC staff. Let's go through the creation of Student and Scientific space one by one.
# Creating a Student space
If you are a Student of a Polish public university, click Create in the Student space box.
The process of creating a new Student space just started. Since you have not added any affiliation yet, there is a time to do so. Once requested, click on the Next button to create a new affiliation credential.
In the next stage, you will be asked to select a method of verification that you are a Student. Depending on a selected method, the verification can be fully automatic or manual. At this stage, there are the following options available:
- PIONIER.Id - if you have an account in PIONIER.Id, logging with this federated identity management system will allow us to confirm your affiliation in a fully automatic way,
- E-mail address in the domain of scientific institution - we will automatically check if e-mails from a provided domain are allowed to create spaces of the selected type, and then we will send a message with a secret OTP code, so you can be able to confirm that the provided e-mail account belongs to you.
- Operator verification - portal operator will contact a scientific institution to check if you are allowed to request for a space of given type. Since a manual action of the operator is needed, the verification with this method can take longer than the verification with the previous two methods.
For the matter of this tutorial, we will select the Operator verification.
Once selected, there are a couple of options to fill. You will need to enter:
- your Index number,
- Institution/University you are a student,
- your email address, consistent with the domain address of the Institution/University website.
You will also need to confirm that you are a student of the selected Institution/University and explain why any of the previous options cannot be used for confirmation of your person.
This data will be used by portal administrators or the support team to confirm your identity and ensure account security. Providing real contact information is important to avoid problems with access to the portal and in case you need to be contacted about issues related to your account.
After completing this task, you can move to the next step.
You will be asked to confirm the ownership of the email address in a university/institution domain you've entered, since it can be a different address than the one created when the account was registered. To do so, you are requested to enter a special OTP code that has been sent to your email address in the specifically crafted message.
The OTP code can be easily found in the message that should be available in your email box in a couple of minutes at most.
Please copy and enter the received OTP code to the input in the form and proceed to the next step.
Now you need to wait on operator to do all checking needed to confirm your student's status. Depending on a situation, it usually takes from one to a couple of days. You will receive email once the decision is made.
If the verification is positive, after some time, you will receive an e-mail confirming that your affiliation is correct, and you can continue the creation of a space.
Now, when you go to the portal, you can notice that there is a new notification for you marked with red circle with number on the bell icon.
If you click on the bell icon, you are presented with the notification list. You may find a notification confirming that your affiliation is accepted.
Moving back to the main view (e.g., by clicking on the PSNC logo), we can realise that the space creation process has a status "In progress", so the space has not yet been created. To continue the process, click on its name.
At this stage, in order to go to the next step of the process, you need to accept the regulations of Student space usage in the portal.
We are almost there. Now you need to provide a few details regarding your space in order to complete the process of contracting a space:
- Space name,
- Research topic name,
- Information if a space should expire at some date or if it should be kept indefinitely.
Once completed, we can go to the last step of our process.
And the last step is just the confirmation that our space is created. Click I understand to finish the process.
From this time, your space is fully active and ready for requesting new services.
